California Energy-Smart Homes

California Energy-Smart Homes provides incentives for new residential construction and alterations to adopt advanced energy measures and transition to all-electric construction. This all-electric residential program offers a streamlined solution to support California’s climate change objectives to reduce greenhouse gases by 40% by 2030. Incentives for above-code buildings with existing plans for gas installation are also available.

What Types of Incentives Does the California Energy-Smart Homes Program Offer?

Incentives for new all-electric residential construction include:

  • Up to $3,500 per single-family home
  • Up to $3,500 per duplex
  • Up to $2,200 per multifamily low-rise unit
  • Up to $1,750 per ADU

Incentives for qualifying replacement equipment include:

  • Ductless mini-split heating pump - $350 per ton
  • Residential central heat pump replacing residential split A/C and furnace - $90 per ton
  • Heat pump water heater replacing storage or tankless natural gas water heater - $450 per HPWH
  • Heat pump clothes dryer replacing gas clothes dryer - $500 per HPD

Participation in the program is open to qualifying utility customers of Southern California Gas Company, Pacific Gas & Electric Company, San Diego Gas & Electric Company, or Southwest Gas Corporation.

NEW Energy Code Effective January 01, 2023!

The 2022 Energy Code now classifies the following as single-family residential buildings: single-family dwellings, duplexes, townhomes of any size, and accessory dwelling units. Low-rise and high-rise multifamily buildings have also been reorganized into one building type and multifamily building requirements have been moved to their own subchapters.
